FALL 2025 / SPRING 2026

Existing Conditions and Pedestrian Observations

This milestone combines two kinds of observation: a detailed inventory of the physical streetscape, and a study of how people actually experience and move through the district on foot.

OVERVIEW

Before designing anything, the studio documents how Old Town La Verne works today. This milestone combines two kinds of observation: a detailed inventory of the physical streetscape, and a study of how people actually experience and move through the district on foot.

Objectives
  • Document the condition of sidewalks, crossings, lighting, trees and shade, furnishings, signs, and accessibility
  • Identify assets, deficiencies, constraints, and opportunities across the study area
  • Observe where people walk, cross, sit, gather, and enter businesses
  • Evaluate pedestrian comfort and the connections between parking, businesses, the A Line station, and the University of La Verne

WHAT TO EXPECT

Two lines of fieldwork

01

Streetscape inventory

comparing daytime and evening conditions, areas that feel active, and areas that lack activity. The results feed two products: an existing conditions map with a photo inventory, and a map of pedestrian experience opportunities.

02

Pedestrian observation

Studio teams will walk the study area to record existing conditions, take photographs, and note maintenance conditions and design themes. They will also observe pedestrian activity during selected periods.
